Cool Card of the Day: 2013-14 Larry Bird / Magic Johnson Upper Deck Exquisite Dual Auto Signature Sole

The only thing that could’ve made this card better would have to been to have Magic on the left and Bird on the right so that the swatches spelled out Converse.

Enjoy the the view!

Some goodies from a trip to one local card shop.

A few weeks ago I took Thursday and Friday off from work as a couple of “mental health” days.  I really like my job, but I have a lot of vacation time and we were coming off a very busy part of the year.  After heading up to have some lunch with the lady, I headed over to SMP Cards to check it out.

We have five (that I know of) card shops in the Fort Worth/Dallas area and this was the last of the shops I made it to.  I loved how much wax they have.  It takes up pretty much both of the side walls in the shop.  There’s a lot of “junk wax” in there as well and I loved it, though I didn’t pick up any.  If you’re on Twitter and follow some of the right collectors, you know there’s a lot of love for old “junk wax,” now that the folks that collected it as kids are now into our 30s and have some expendable income.

I spent probably at least an hour in the shop and while I didn’t spend too much, I made a few small pickups.  The shop had a few boxes of cards that were 3/$10.  They were mostly “junk” autos and memorabilia cards from the early 2000s.  However, that is right down my alley.  The first time I find a shop that has something like this (or a new seller at a show), I know it’s a potential gold mine for my PC.  I posted previously about my first trip to a local card shop where I found quite a few WVU cards for my PC and that’s oftentimes a typical outcome the first time I visit those new shops.

I wasn’t as lucky this time, but I did find three cards worth picking up.

No explanation is needed on why I picked these up.  I know that I already had these, but it’s all about the PC fun, so why not pick up another?

img181

If you watch college football, you know Jesse Palmer as one of ESPN’s analysts and you probably either really love or hate him.  Social media tells me that it’s likely the latter, but I happen to be a fan of him.  I’ve decided that I want to start collecting cards of former athletes turned announcers, at least the ones I like.  I recently picked up a Petros Papadakis card from a USC set.  Both are now a part of a PC that might be unlike any other.

I picked up a couple other random pieces.

005

I remember having a few of these oversized cards as a kid, so I decided to pick these up for the grand total of a buck.  Who else remembers these?  Anyone?

006

At the time of the pickup, I hadn’t decided yet that I was done with really trying to trade online.  I picked this up as trade bait, as Teemu Selanne was on the back and I thought that I might find an interested party.  I believe there’s a card in the middle as well.  Not sure yet if I’m going to open it up or maybe give it away on the Triple B Twitter account.

007

FInally, I picked up these random packs that were just sitting on a shelf.  There wasn’t even a box for them and they just looked so lonely there.  I knew they had to go home with me and I could give them a good home.  Wait, they are cards…not a puppy.  I still haven’t opened them up, but may do it later today and post the results.  Not sure if there’s even anything noteworthy from the set.

(Mail) Day With the Cup

Of the higher dollar Andrew Shaw cards out there, this is probably my least favorite one.  Upper Deck does a fantastic job on the photographs they use on these cards, but I feel this is one of the worst of the photos.  I don’t know why, but it’s just not a visually pleasing photo, even though it’s very different from any other Shaw card.

img169img170

I did already have one of these, but when this one showed up with a very low buy it now, I went ahead and snatched it up.  I’ve posted on trade threads that I’m interested in the Blackhawks Day with the Cup cards, but haven’t had ANY luck acquiring any.  I would like to put the set together in time.  I knew I’d need a double of this one if I did, so I went ahead and snagged it.

A #RAOK #Mailday for me.

Shortly after the National ended, Chris from Indianapolis send me a message on twitter and said he had some things to send me.  We hadn’t made any trades before, but were both loyal customers of Baseball Card Exchange in Indy (before I moved).  He said that it was just because I couldn’t make The National.  I’ve mentioned multiple people in the past that make the hobby a lot better and don’t worry about every last dollar.  Chris is just another example.

I had no idea what was coming but I received the box a couple of weeks ago and I couldn’t have been more happy when I saw the first card!

img186

I believe this is my ninth one of these.  I absolutely love the Anthology stick cards and am excited to add this one to my PC.

img187

This was the second card that I saw and it is also already in my PC.  It’s only the second Toews PC card I have.  The other is an Anthology Stick card like the Shaw that I wrote about previously.

These Blackhawks have also been added to the PC.

Chris also sent all of these cards.  I’ve decided since that I’m really going to narrow down my PC.  After talking with him, I’ve decided that I’m going to do what he did for me, and I will send these out in further random acts of kindness at a later time.  They don’t fit in for me and I’m confident I can find somewhere that they will be among friends.  I feel that the hobby should be more of a brotherhood (or sisterhood, if the female collectors prefer) and I do like doing for others.  It’s the least that I can do.

BOX BREAK: 2012-13 Upper Deck Hockey BLASTER

When I took this blaster out of the closet, the receipt was still in the bag.  It was dated April 9.  Yup, I allowed this to sit in my closet for almost four months?  Why?  Well, I have had plenty of things to write about since the blog started. Also, there’s really nothing that outstanding in this product.  This is from the season of the last lockout and there’s just one series.  There aren’t many noteworthy rookies.  The ones that were had their cards in the 2013-14 product, resulting in the “dual rookie class” that is often spoken of.  My steady blog readers know that I rarely pass up Upper Deck blasters that are marked down.  This isn’t the first of these that I’ve busted in the last year, but it is the first that I’ve blogged about.

026

I got a little excited and removed the shrinkwrap before the obligatory pic.  Oopsie!

Among the Young Guns, there are no players that are really high dollar.  The Mark Stone is the best, booking at $25.  There are four others (Torey Krug, Sven Baertschi, Chris Kreider and Jaden Scwartz) that book $20.  There’s only another handful that are over $10, so all-in-all, not much here.  These were my two Young Guns:

028

My inserts were nothing noteworthy either.  Buying this blaster, though, I basically knew I wasn’t going to “get anything” back.

029

I basically ended up with a bunch of cards for dime boxes at some of the local card shows.  However, you just never know what you’ll get, even out of a blaster.  I don’t open boxes much anymore, so anytime I do, it’s really all about the fun of it.

The @BeckettRadio & @UpperDeckHockey Contribution to #TheAndrewShawProject

A few weeks before the National, Upper Deck‘s Chris Carlin was on Beckett Radio to talk about the company’s plans at the show.  Mr. Carlin gave them a Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup Champions set.

I knew that I would NEED the Andrew Shaw card for my PC and entered the giveaway.  I ended up winning the set!  So, I now have a direct contribution to the PC from Upper Deck and Beckett Radio.  Maybe it makes me a dork, but I think that’s it’s cool to WIN a card for my PC.

img173img174

Looking through the set, I would like to share something.  If you don’t have one of these, just know that the cards seem to be very condition sensitive.  I’m not saying that it’s a good or bad thing, it’s just the reality.  They seem to get a lot of chipping.  If you find a good one, maybe it’s worth sending to Beckett Grading.
