Vintage Football Card of the Day – The T206 Honus Wagner of Football Cards

Yesterday’s Vintage Football Card of the Day was the first known football card.  Do you know what it is?  Maybe you did, but I would bet that most don’t.

People outside of the hobby know about the T206 Honus Wagner and it’s scarcity and value.  However, do you know what the football equivalent of that card is?  The 1894 Mayo Cut Plug Anonymous/John Dunlop (it goes by many names) is that card.

Estimates on the number of copies of this card start as low as the six known copies.  Other estimates I’ve seen state from “less than a dozen” to “less than 20.”  It won’t cost you what the Wagner will, but it’s obviously not cheap.  An SGC 20 copy ended on eBay less than a week ago, but did not draw it’s opening bid of $23k.   A lower graded copy sold in a Goodwin & Co. auction in 2009 for over $12k.

If you’d like to learn a little more about the card, you can check out the links below.
