The Real Reason I Went to Today’s Card Show

It’s been a few months since I’ve hit any of the North Dallas card shows.  I’ve hit the twice-monthly on that’s 15 or so minutes from me a few times, but that’s about it.  However, there were FOUR autograph guests at today’s show and one of the signers, I wanted to get.

I’ve become very excited about my TTM autographs and have decided to work on getting a couple of the sets of my youth autographed.

When my dad’s house burnt down a couple of years ago, I did lose some stuff.  There were some cards there, but luckily I had the “good stuff” with me.  Very little made it, but one thing that did was a set of the 1989 Donruss Baseball’s Best.  I brought it back to Texas with me after a trip this spring.  It dawned on me that it would be a cool project and I decided to go for it.

Last weekend, I opened a box (well, I still have five or so packs to go) of 1991 Stadium Club.  This was a set that I did not have much of as a kid.  Three dollars a pack was pretty pricey for a 12-year old kid.

Former All-Star Jeff Russell is in both of these sets.  He was signing.  It had to be done.  In my earlier post today I stated that I had to stop by a card shop before the show.  The reason that was Russell is in Series 2 of the Stadium Club set and the box I had was Series 1.

I had to wait a couple of hours for the signing to start but once I got up to him, it was nice to see that he was friendly and gracious.  He was willing to make small talk as he signed.  I’m not one to try and jibber-jabber or anything but mentioned that even though I didn’t grow up in Texas, I still liked him as a kid (which is the truth).  He took the time to ask if I preferred blue or black ink.  I didn’t care, but it was nice that he offered.

As he returned my second card to me a kid that was probably two or so just came up and threw something on the table.  He happily signed and posed for a picture with the family.  I waited until they were done, told him thank you and shook his hand.  I also mentioned to him that I was going to start getting both of these sets signed and he was the first one for each set.

One down, a lot more to go.
