Recent Acquisitions

My posts on the blog have slowed down, but my collecting has not. I have still been picking up cards now and then but just haven’t shared all of them. However, today is the day.

2016 Topps Now #528 Jedd Gyorko /268

I did not keep close tabs on Topps Now, but Jason did.  When Jedd Gyorko finally had a card he was kind enough to let me know and I was able to get two copies of this.  The only Gyorko cards I look at acquire are the few picturing him in his West Virginia University uniform, but any Topps Now cards will always be an exception to that rule.

I did not even know this card existed.  A fellow collector was kind enough to tag me in a Facebook group when this was up for auction.  Jim Cornelison sings our national anthem before every Chicago Blackhawks home game and it is always a must listen for me.

The plan was to wait on Andrew Shaw 2016-17 O-Pee-Chee cards to hit COMC and I would buy them for The Andrew Shaw ProjectThe Andrew Shaw Project, but I got impatient.  I found a seller that had both the base and Retro that I could pick up and while at it, searched some of his other items.  I passively collect John Klingberg, but mostly just have Young Guns and autographs.  I’m going to work on completing as much of that Scott Darling rainbow as I can.  My plan with the Ryan Hartman is to send it and see if I can get a TTM autograph success with it.

1938 Wills’ Cigarettes #20 Major Goldie Gardner

I picked these up from a Sportlots auction.  Ab Jenkins is the only one of the three I know, but they are vintage racing and were very cheap, so I decided to add them to my collection.

As a player collector, something that really annoys me is that with all of the jersey cards out there, Andrew Shaw’s only jersey card is his rookie and parallels from The Cup.  This Panini Luxury Suite stick card of the only other “memorabilia” card of his.  The print run is 199 and this one makes the 11th added to my collection.

I checked the sellers other auctions and decided to pick up the Kris Versteeg since additional cards didn’t have an additional shipping fee.

The Andrew Shaw Champs Gold Back was a card that I needed for the Shaw PC and when I went to buy it on eBay, I discovered that the seller was Derek (@OTCards).  Derek and I have made a handful of deals in the past and he’s one of the really good guys in the hobby.

About two years ago, he contacted me after he came into a hard-to-find (and pricey) Shaw that I needed for my collection, a Dominion Engravatures card /15.  We were able to make the biggest trade that I’ve ever been a part of and I owe Derek for helping me add this card.  I haven’t seen another one.

He also had the Scott Darling that I needed to work on the aforementioned rainbow so I purchased it as well.  Thank you so much, Derek!

There aren’t too many guys that have played in the NHL that are from Indianapolis, but Cameron Schilling is one of them (other active players are John-Michael Liles and Jack Johnson).  I’d picked up a few of his cards when I lived in Indy but hadn’t picked any up in a while.  I decided to passively work on this rainbow and picked these two up cheaply on Sportlots.

I mentioned earlier that I’m not too patient.  I’d already bought a copy of the O-Pee-Chee base card, but it was coming from Canada so I picked up another when I bought the Rainbow parallel on Sportlots.  As I usually do, I checked out the sellers other items and was able to the 2014-15 O-Pee-Chee Platinum base rookies of John Klingberg and Scott Darling.

The final mail day in this post is from Sportslots auctions.  All were from the same seller that always has a lot of items up there.  That makes it more likely that I will bid, since I can combine shipping.  I wouldn’t have paid much for the Ryan Hartman, but at the price I got it for, I’m happy to add it to my Blackhawks collection.  I really like the Patrick Sharp because it’s a two-color Blackhawks swatch, but he’s listed with my “other” team, the Dallas Stars.  It’s a piece I consider very unique.  I picked up the Tyler Toffoli for a friend, only to find out he no longer collects Toffoli.  Oops!

I hope that you and yours have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and happy collecting!
