A Canadian Addition to my WVU Collection

I’d long wondered if there was a resource that could help me find out if there were any CFL cards of former West Virginia Mountaineers.  I wasn’t looking for the Pat White or Steve Slaton cards from last year or even the Major Harris or Mike Vanderjagt JOGO issues from the 1980s and 1990s.

I knew about those issues.  I was trying to find things I didn’t know I was looking for.  I was looking for the 1960s and 1970s CFL cards of former Mountaineers.  I stumbled upon a great resource a couple of weeks ago that has vintage cards listed by school.  While I was ecstatic to find it, I was a little upset at myself.  It was actually on a site that I’m on with some frequency, but just didn’t realize THAT was there.

It appears that there’s only one card that was what I was looking for.  I’ve read some of John Antonik’s books on WVU football and I don’t even recall the name Ed Williams.  It’s possible I could have gone on forever not knowing that this card exists.

I quick internet search found this:  “At Sandusky High, Williams rushed for 3,155 yards in 3 years and made 2 All American teams. He was also UPI Back of the Year in Ohio. Ed was considered to have an explosive start and exceptionally quick feet. Coach Bowden considered these his finest assets. As a sophomore he rushed for 589 yards on 88 carries for a 6.7 average. He also gained 208 yards and earned most valuable offensive player at the Peach Bowl while breaking WVU single game rushing mark.”

Maybe I should have heard of Ed Williams.  Perhaps I have.  Either way, I’m happy to add this card to my collection.
