Rest Peacefully, Ray Emery

I was saddened early this afternoon hearing the news that former NHL goaltender Ray Emery died, due to drowning.  Emery played my favorite position, backup to Corey Crawford, two seasons for the Blackhawks and was a part of Chicago’s 2013 Stanley Cup Champion team.

During the 2011-12 season, he compiled a 15-9-4 record with a 2.81 GAA.  The Blackhawks nominated him for the Bill Masterson trophy, honoring dedication and preserverance.

Emery won his first 12 games of the 2012-13 season, the longest streak in NHL history.  He finished the season with 17 wins and a 1.90 GAA.

The card companies didn’t give his time in Chicago much love, since he wasn’t a starter and they don’t like producing sets that go deep into rosters.  I have just one Ray Emery card in my collection, and it’s the way I will remember him.

He will be fondly remembered by this Blackhawks fan.  Godspeed, sir.
