Since the 2015 NFL Draft had a two-sport star selected as the number one overall pick last week in Jameis Winston from Florida State, I thought I’d take a look back at possibly the most widely known two-sport athlete of my generation.
This week’s edition of Baseball Card of the Week features a two-sport athlete that captured the attention of both kids and adults alike during the late 80s/early 90s with his athleticism and flair for the dramatic. I’m talking about none other than Deion Sanders.
Sanders was drafted into the MLB in 1988 by the New York Yankees in the 30th round and was drafted into the NFL in 1989 by the Atlanta Falcons as the fifth overall pick. Sanders was an instant star for the Falcons (and later for the Cowboys, 49ers, Redskins, and Ravens) but his baseball career is probably best remembered as a member of the Atlanta Braves during the 1990s although he also spent time with the Reds and Giants.
The card featured can easily be found for a $1 or less today. Originally it was seeded into 1992 Upper Deck Lo Series packs (baseball) and carried a $3-5 price tag. It was never as popular as the Jordan SP1 inserted into 1991 Upper Deck packs, but still coveted nonetheless.
